CORNWALL TWITCHING

We decided to go to Cornwall to twitch the Pacific loon with our friend Matt (Sussex birder) that comes back most years so there was a good chance of getting this bird.

We arrived at Newlyn at 7:05 AM just before light but there was no sign of the Pacific loon, we moved along the coast and pic up Common scoter, Goldeneye, Turnstone and a couple of  Purple sandpiper but there was still no sign of any Loon.

Purple sandpiper
We then drove to the Jubilee pool were we saw 2 Savinian grebes, 1 Red throated loon And the Pacific loon that was found by matt, it was quite far off but you could still see it was a loon we watched the bird which gave us enough time to help pick out key features, after about 30 minutes we saw a raft of 6 Black throated loons.

we also had some great veiws of  Great northern loon, there was also lots of sanderling, turnstone and the occasional Purple sandpiper flying round, and Rock pipits and meadow pipits.

Grey phalarope

We then got news of a Grey phalarope which was really close in, we got amazing views of this spectacular little bird .it was are first phalarope on the sea which was good to watch , also there was a great crested grebe , and a guillemot , and another great northern loon .
all in all a good day and a nice area to go birding .
sorry about no pictures of this Pacific loon
